Quarantine (computing)

Quarantine is a function of antivirus software that isolates infected files on a computer's hard disk. Files put in quarantine are no longer capable of infecting their hosting system.

Development and release

In December, 1988, shortly after the Morris Worm, work started on Quarantine, an anti-malware and file reliability product. Released in April, 1989, Quarantine was the first such product to use file signature instead of viral signature methods.

The original Quarantine used Hunt's B-tree database of files with both their CRC16 and CRC-CCITT signatures. Doubling the signatures rendered useless, or at least immoderately difficult, attacks based on CRC invariant modifications. Release 2, April 1990, used a CRC-32 signature and one based on CRC-32 but with a few bits in each word shuffled. The subsequent MS-AV from Microsoft, designed by Check Point, apparently relied on only an eight bit checksum—at least out of a few thousand files there were hundreds with identical signatures.

Quarantine (Laurel Halo album)

Quarantine is the debut album by American electronic musician Laurel Halo, released in 2012 on the Hyperdub label.

Artwork

The album cover features an adaptation of Harakiri School Girls, a work by Makoto Aida which Halo chose for the artwork after seeing it an exhibition on Japanese pop art in New York.

Critical reception

Critical response came from all major music publications including The Wire who made the release ‘Album of the Year’ in December 2012. The Quietus stated that Quarantine was “Nothing short of magnificent.” The Quietus also went on to say that the album, “remains one of this year's most intriguing and divisive listens.”

Ian Cohen from Pitchfork stated that the album was “Something definitive - her best and most cohesive work to date.“

The Guardian rated Quarantine 4/5, claiming that the album, “Grows in power with repeated listens.”

Resident Advisor states “Quarantine binds her past sounds into a toxic, lush blend of ambient suspension and disorienting detail. Halo’s melancholic vocals, at turns dry or digitally mangled, serve as psychic counterpoint to the placid, isolated nature of the sonic environments in which they’re situated.” They also went on to say that the album was Halo’s “most immersive and beautiful work to date.”

Quarantine (1994 video game)

Quarantine is a 1994 racing/first-person shooter computer game for MS-DOS and 3DO, created by Imagexcel and published by GameTek. Versions for the Japanese market were done in 1996 by Asmik for the PlayStation and MediaQuest for the Sega Saturn, renamed as Hard Rock Cab and Death Throttle respectively. In the game the player drives a taxicab through a post-apocalyptic city, picking up customers and killing enemies. Due to the gratuitous violence the game was controversial at the time of release.

Background history

The success of Doom by id Software in 1993 led to many other companies attempting to follow Doom's success. Most ended up making unsuccessful "doom clones". Quarantine was one of the few games that successfully exploited the features of Doom with its own texture mapped stages, semi-open world maps, and vehicular combat gameplay. The game was later continued with the sequel, Quarantine II: Road Warrior, which largely kept the original gameplay, but introduced a more mission and story-driven gameplay.

Corona is an Italian eurodance act, fronted by Olga Maria De Souza. Originally produced by Francesco "Checco" Bontempi (a.k.a. Lee Marrow) (1st-2nd album), it found success in 1993 with the worldwide hits ”The Rhythm of the Night” and “Baby Baby”. Later producers include Francesco Conte and Paolo Dughero.

History

"The Rhythm of The Night"

Debut single was "The Rhythm of the Night", released in Italy in November 1993 on Roberto Zanetti’s DWA record label, and became an instant hit. It stayed at number 1 on the Italian music chart for eight consecutive weeks. However, the song was not released elsewhere until the following year. A remixed version of the song became a number 2 hit in the United Kingdom in September 1994.

Like several early 1990s Eurodance/Hi-NRG songs that eventually became American hits, such as "Get Ready For This", "Twilight Zone" and "Tribal Dance" by 2 Unlimited and "Strike It Up", "I Don't Know Anybody Else" and "Everybody Everybody" by Black Box, "The Rhythm of The Night" did not become popular in the United States until well after its success had peaked in Europe. However, by spring 1995, the song was all over American radio and clubs, eventually reaching #11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
